Accessibility statement
By accessible, we mean that we want the Academy to be as accessible as possible to as many people as possible - wherever and however they want to use it.
This means you should be able to access it using a computer, tablet, or mobile phone, and low bandwidth versions of content are available for those who need it.
To ensure usability and accessibility, we have followed accessibility principles wherever possible, for instance:
- Ensuring good contrast of text and backgrounds, and clear audio
- Ensuring there are always captions and transcripts for audio and video
- Meaning not conveyed through colour alone
- Interactions possible through touch, keyboard, or mouse etc
- Content usable with screen readers, which also makes it easy to use with keyboards and other devices
- User controls over any time-based media
- Avoiding activities being done against the clock
- Providing clear instructions
- User control over navigation
However, we appreciate that every user is different and has different needs. If for any reason you cannot access or use the Academy, please contact us at academy@hivjustice.net and tell us why. We will do our best to help you.
Community guidelines
We need the Academy to be a safe and respectful space for users, especially because we are covering difficult or sensitive subjects. So, when you chat or share information in the Academy, please follow these guidelines:
- No defamatory, indecent, offensive, profane, discriminatory, misleading, unlawful or threatening comments.
- Personal attacks, name-calling, trolling and abuse will not be tolerated.
- Spamming, posting promotional material or posting links to third party websites that are not aligned with these guidelines, is not permitted.
- We reserve the right to delete any comments that do not adhere to these guidelines at our discretion and block any repeat offenders. We will remove content that is offensive, fraudulent, deceptive or misleading.
- Treat others with respect, in the knowledge that other people have had different life experiences and may have different perspectives to yours. We welcome different viewpoints, expressed respectfully.
- The Academy is a public place. Do not post personal information that you would not be comfortable sharing with a stranger. We recommend that you do not post any information that may identify you or anyone else, such as address, email address or phone number - or any other information.
- Please do not upload files to the system.
We will normally provide warnings to people before removing them, but serious breaches of these guidelines may result in immediate removal.
If you are aware of someone who is not adhering to these guidelines, please let us know by emailing us at academy@hivjustice.net.

FAQs
What’s the difference between an On Demand and Scheduled Course?
On Demand Courses: these are available immediately, and you can do them at your own pace (though we recommend completing them fairly quickly so you don’t forget what you are learning!).
Scheduled Courses: when these become available, will include some sessions with a trainer (online webinar sessions) - so you will work with a cohort of other learners following a schedule. Most of the course will still be online and you can still do it at your own pace at a time that suits you. However, you will need to complete certain parts of the course in time to be able to attend any scheduled webinar session(s).
I want to do a scheduled course but can’t see a way of starting it
To join a scheduled course, you need to email us at academy@hivjustice.net to request a place on a course. Places on these courses are limited so we can’t guarantee everyone will get a place, but we’ll do our best.
I am not sure whether the Academy will work on my computer or phone
Please check our technical requirements.
My internet bandwidth isn’t great - will it still work?
We have designed the Academy so that if you don’t have a lot of internet bandwidth it will still work. You can read transcripts instead of streaming videos, for instance.
If your connection to the internet goes down while you are doing the course, when you are able to reconnect, it will remember where you were when you were last connected. Your progress on the course is saved regularly as you go along.
Why do I need to register?
Registering means you can save and see your progress through the course, and we need a record of your progress, so you receive a certificate if you pass the course.
We also need to know who is taking part in our courses so that we can look at the impact of the courses we offer and improve the service.
Finally, we are dependent on our donors for funding this Academy. We need to be able to report on the numbers of people who use the system and how successful it is. We will not pass your personal information to our donors.
There are a lot of Further Resources in my course – do I have to look at them all?
The Further Resources are optional extras. They aren’t essential to completing the course, but if you have time, we think you’ll find them useful and interesting. You could save them to read or watch later if you prefer.
Why are some of the Further Resources only available in English?
Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, not all resources are available in multiple languages. However, depending on the type of resource, there are ways to machine translate them. For instance, you can use Google translate to translate web pages. And in YouTube, you can turn on subtitles/closed captions, and in settings, select Auto Translate and your preferred language.
How do I get a certificate?
You get a certificate when you have completed a course. Each course has its own completion criteria, but usually you will need to have read every page on the course, and pass any tests successfully.
How do I play the videos?
For videos within the course, use the controls at the bottom of the video. On the left: select the play button (the arrow). When the video is playing, this becomes a pause button – useful if you are interrupted, or if you want to take time to read subtitles for instance. The middle bar shows how far through the video you are. On the right of the controls, there is a volume control, and then a settings button. You can use this to slow the video down, or speed it up.
If you prefer you can, instead of or as well as watching the video, download the transcript which lets you read what was in the video at your own pace.
Videos outside of the course - in Further resources - may have slightly different buttons, but the principles will be the same.
Do I need Zoom?
We use Zoom to run our online virtual classes as part of our Scheduled Courses (when available). You don’t need Zoom for On Demand courses, and you don’t need a Zoom account to join a virtual class.
If you are not familiar with Zoom, have a look at Zoom’s Learning Centre: https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/360029527911-The-Zoom-Learning-Center-is-now-available-
Before any Zoom session we will share joining instructions which will include headlines on using Zoom.
The technical requirements in this Help Centre include details on what you need to access Zoom.
How do I use Zoom?
If you are registered on a scheduled course, you’ll be sent an invitation to the Zoom meeting which will include the date and time, and the meeting details.
- Make sure you have checked the right time for your time zone.
- You can join a meeting by clicking the meeting link or going to join.zoom.us and entering in the meeting ID. See Zoom’s support pages on joining a meeting for more information: https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/201362193.
- On most devices, you can join computer/device audio by clicking Join Audio, Join with Computer Audio, or Audio to access the audio settings.
- While you are not required to have a webcam to join a Zoom meeting or webinar, you will not be able to transmit video of yourself. You will continue to be able to listen and speak during the meeting, share your screen, and view the webcam video of other participants.
- Once you’re in the meeting, your facilitator will talk you through the key functions you’ll need to use. Further information can be found in the Zoom support pages on participating in a Zoom meeting: https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/sections/4415050795661-Participating-in-Meetings .
Do I need to use Chat?
When you register for our online courses, you will get access to our Academy chat. This is a community of all our learners and it’s a great way of sharing experiences and learning from others.
If you don’t want to use the chat, you don’t have to. However, the more people that use it, the more useful it is for everyone.
Note that the chat isn’t monitored by us, so if you have questions for us, please look at Contact Us.
How do I use the chat?
You can use the chat as long as you are registered with the Academy.
I’m inspired by what I’ve seen in the Academy - what next?
Fantastic! There’s lots that you can do to get involved, for instance:
- Sign up to the HIV Justice newsletter https://www.hivjustice.net/newsletter/.
- Find a local organisation in the Organisations section of the Global HIV Criminalisation Database, and contact them
- If you represent an organisation, then join HIV JUSTICE WORLDWIDE to become part of a vibrant global community of advocates fighting to abolish HIV-related criminalisation. https://www.hivjusticeworldwide.org/
- Remember to complete our survey to let us know what you liked (or didn’t) in the Academy.
I’ve forgotten my Login details
You sign in with your email address and a password.
If you have forgotten your password, please select the ‘I’ve lost my password’ link on the Login screen and you’ll be sent an email which you use to re-set to a new password.
If you have forgotten which email address you used to create an account, please send an email to academy@hivjustice.net, and tell us your first name and last name, and we will let you know.
Links to other sites
We provide links to resources – documents, videos, websites – outside of the HIV Justice Network and HIV JUSTICE WORLDWIDE websites.
While we have carefully selected sources and materials from other organisations, we have no control over their privacy policies or in the processing of any data you provide, nor in the accuracy of the information on these sites.
Popups
You need to enable/allow popup windows for the Academy to work properly. How you do this will depend on what type of device and browser you are using.
If you are using:
- Chrome - https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/95472
- Microsoft Edge - to ensure popups are not blocked: Block pop-ups in Microsoft Edge
- Firefox - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/pop-blocker-settings-exceptions-troubleshooting

Reporting a problem
If you need support or help using the Academy please first check the Help and FAQs within the Help area, as they provide answers for the most common issues.
If you can’t find the information you need, or if you have something you want to report to us, please email us at academy@hivjustice.net - please include your first and last name.
We would especially like to hear from you if you are having problems using the Academy, if you notice anything wrong with its contents, or if you have suggestions for improvement.
Technical requirements for the Academy
We’ve done our best to make sure you can use the Academy in as many systems as possible, but we can’t guarantee it will work in everything, particularly older devices. We will support and test in the latest Operating Systems (Windows, Macs, iOS and Android) and Browsers (Google Chrome, Apple's Safari, Microsoft Edge, and Firefox).
Our main testing is in the systems highlighted here, and we will do some testing in the others.

For users with low bandwidth:
- We do not autoplay videos, so you can choose not to play video and not use up data allowances
- There will be an alternative to any online classroom events (should we offer them) with transcript and low bandwidth versions
- Videos have low bandwidth alternatives such as transcript documents.
